Productomschrijving

A striking example of late Ming dynasty export porcelain, this antique Chinese blue and white plate dates to the late 16th – early 17th century, likely during the Wanli period (1573–1620). The stylistic features suggest production in Southern China, possibly within the Zhangzhou (Swatow) kilns, known for their expressive brushwork and export wares.

Origin

  • Country: China

  • Region: Likely Southern China (Zhangzhou area)

  • Period: Late 16th – early 17th century

  • Dynasty: Ming Dynasty, Wanli period (attribution based on stylistic analysis; definitive confirmation requires physical specialist examination)

Material & Technique

  • High-fired hard porcelain

  • Underglaze cobalt blue decoration

  • Transparent glaze

  • Unglazed foot rim

  • Entirely hand-painted

The slightly coarse porcelain body, spontaneous brushwork, and tonal variations in the cobalt blue are characteristic of late Ming provincial and export production.

Decoration

The plate features:

  • A central medallion with a floral motif

  • Four ribbon-like or calligraphic symbols

  • A wide rim decorated with mythical animals (possibly qilin or lion-like creatures)

  • Ruyi-inspired auspicious symbolism

  • Simple brush ornamentation on the reverse

The lively, free painting style is typical of Zhangzhou (often referred to as Swatow ware), which was widely exported to Southeast Asia and Europe during the late Ming period.

Condition

Overall condition: Good, considering its age (over 400 years old)

  • No visible breaks

  • No major restorations observed

  • Natural kiln marks and iron spots (typical for 17th-century production)

  • Wear to the foot rim consistent with age

  • Minor firing irregularities inherent to the period

The condition is entirely consistent with authentic late Ming export porcelain.

Historical Context

Zhangzhou wares were produced primarily for export markets and are valued today for their bold brushwork and historical importance within global maritime trade networks. These pieces played a significant role in early trade between China, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
