Productomschrijving
Authentic hand-thrown stoneware jug, dating from approximately 1750–1850, originating from Western Europe. This type of utilitarian vessel was commonly used for storing and pouring water, wine, vinegar, or oil in domestic and agricultural settings.
The jug reflects late pre-industrial craftsmanship, produced before standardized factory ceramics became dominant.
Description
The jug has a cylindrical body with a tapering shoulder, short neck, and a pulled single handle. The form is slightly irregular, with visible throwing marks and uneven wall thickness — clear indicators of hand production.
It is finished in a natural ash/salt glaze, showing a mottled surface in tones of dark brown, grey, and beige. The glaze has pooled and reacted unevenly during firing, creating an organic, textured appearance typical of high-fired stoneware.
The base shows three kiln support marks, confirming traditional firing methods. No factory marks or stamps are present.
Origin (probable)
Likely produced in Western Europe, possibly:
-
Rhineland (Germany)
-
Northern France
-
Southern Netherlands / Belgian Meuse region
Without excavation context or direct comparative examples, a precise attribution is not possible, which is common for utilitarian stoneware of this period.
