Productomschrijving

Antique Wooden Tantalus Liquor Box with Four Hand-Blown Decanters – ca. 1850 – Mahogany, Brass Fittings & Gilded Glass

Elegant, historical, and full of character – this antique liquor box is a true gem for collectors and lovers of unique interior pieces. The beautifully crafted wooden case, dating from around 1840–1880, houses four matching hand-blown glass decanters with delicate gilt decoration. A wonderful example of 19th-century craftsmanship that retains both decorative and functional value. This set breathes history and makes a striking addition to any bar, library, or classic interior.

This so-called “Tantalus” box was designed to store liquor in a secure yet refined manner. In the 19th century, these lockable cases were commonly used in upper-class households. The name is a nod to the mythical figure Tantalus, who could see water but not drink it — much like the bottles in this case that were visible but only accessible with a key. It discouraged unauthorized use while remaining decorative.

Collecting & Investment
Tantalus boxes have become rare, especially when the original decanters are still present. While this set shows visible signs of wear, it remains highly attractive to collectors of antique barware, 19th-century furniture, or decorative curiosities.

Condition
This piece is in used antique condition. The wooden box shows scratches, stains, and a split near one hinge. The brass lock is partially functional. The decanters have yellowing and wear to the gilt decoration. Some stoppers do not match perfectly or show damage. Despite these signs of age, the set remains visually appealing and complete.
