This very fine two-volume edition of Les Travailleurs de la Mer was published in Paris by Hetzel, the renowned French publisher known for his exceptionally richly decorated bindings. This edition is a beautiful example of high-quality French book production from the late 19th century.
The books are bound in blue cloth covers with impressive gilt and polychrome stamping in gold, turquoise, and light green. The covers are richly decorated with symmetrical floral and geometric ornaments and a central medallion featuring the title and author’s name. The spines carry the title, the name of Victor Hugo, and the volume number in gold.
This type of binding is known as an éditeur-binding, characteristic of Hetzel editions, where literature and design are consciously combined. These books were intended as showpieces for the library, in addition to their literary significance.
