Origin & Type

Very likely:

  • Chinese export porcelain

  • 19th century (circa 1850–1900)

  • Qing Dynasty period (late phase)

The combination of blue-and-white interior painting with a brown iron-oxide glazed exterior is commonly known as Batavia ware, named after historic VOC trade routes (Batavia being the former name for Jakarta).

This type of porcelain was widely exported to Europe and remains highly collectible.

Technique

  • Hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue

  • Transparent glaze

  • Iron-oxide brown exterior glaze

  • Decoration appears hand-painted rather than transfer-printed

Condition

Overall condition: Good to fair

  • Light rim wear consistent with age

  • No visible major cracks

  • No significant chips observed

  • Minor wear to bases from use

  • General age-related signs

Condition remains appropriate for mid-to-late 19th-century export porcelain.
