Product Description

An exceptional hand-carved wooden religious wall console depicting Christ bound at the column (Ecce Homo motif), framed within an ornate Rococo-style architectural surround.

This devotional relief sculpture likely dates from the 18th century (possibly late 17th to early 18th century), based on stylistic and construction characteristics.

Description

The central figure portrays Christ:

  • Hands bound

  • Partially draped

  • Standing beside the column of flagellation

  • Expressive devotional facial features

The sculpture is set within an openwork Rococo frame featuring:

  • Shell (rocaille) cresting

  • Symmetrical scrolling foliage

  • Elaborate leaf carvings

  • Decorative niche-like structure

The composition reflects Baroque and Rococo devotional traditions common in Southern Catholic regions.

Origin (Probable)

Comparable works were produced in:

  • Southern Netherlands (Flanders)

  • Southern Germany

  • Austria

  • Northern France

The reverse shows:

  • Old wood with natural aging

  • Construction methods consistent with 18th-century carving

  • No visible modern machine tooling

Material & Technique

  • Hand-carved wood (likely oak or linden)

  • Traces of original polychromy

  • Remnants of gilding

  • Iron chain element (appears original)

The open carving and layered construction demonstrate skilled craftsmanship.

Dating

Likely 18th century, based on:

  • Rococo ornamentation

  • Shell crest and scroll motifs

  • Devotional Ecce Homo subject

  • Aged wood structure and tool marks

Further specialist examination could refine attribution and origin.

Condition

Overall condition: Good, age-appropriate

  • Wear to polychrome surface

  • Craquelure and paint loss

  • Visible historic restoration

  • Age-related wood splits

  • Original chain present

  • No major structural damage visible

The wear and surface losses are consistent with age and devotional use, contributing to authenticity.
