Product Description

Large Delft Blue Tobacco Jar with Lid | Hand-painted VARINAS inscription | Floral decoration | Vintage Dutch ceramic | ca. 1950–1980

Collectors of Delftware and vintage tobacco jars will appreciate the fine detail and craftsmanship of this large ceramic tobacco jar. Featuring a floral blue-and-white design and the inscription "VARINAS", this piece echoes the colonial-style shop jars of the 18th century. Topped with a brass lid and decorated with graceful craquelure, it is a striking and historically inspired decorative object for any interior.

This tobacco jar was made by a Delftware studio, as evidenced by the crowned mark and the inscription “Delft Ann Painted” on the base. Likely produced in the Netherlands between 1950 and 1980, this jar is a 20th-century reproduction of earlier 18th-century tobacco containers. “Ann” may refer to an individual artist or a specific painting studio.

This item was originally used to store pipe tobacco. The term “Varinas” refers to a fine, mild tobacco leaf that originated in South America, particularly Venezuela, and became a popular and prized variety in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Such labeled jars were a staple in colonial apothecaries and luxury tobacconist shops, intended to preserve the tobacco and reflect the exotic origin of its contents.

A perfect vintage gift for collectors and lovers of tobacco culture This hand-painted Delft tobacco jar is an ideal gift for those interested in pipe smoking, vintage shop fittings, antique kitchen décor, or Delft pottery. Whether for a birthday, retirement, or to complete a tobacco-themed collection, this jar will be a meaningful and eye-catching present.
