Product Description

Rare vintage tobacco jar “TOEBACK” with brass lid | Delft blue ceramic with multicolor decoration | ca. 1950–1980 | House of History

This striking tobacco jar is a true eye-catcher for lovers of vintage ceramics and Dutch tradition. Beautifully decorated in the Delft blue style, the jar features elegant floral motifs and the bold label “TOEBACK” on the front. The brass lid enhances its nostalgic charm, making it a unique decorative piece. Looking for something with character, history, and aesthetic appeal? This jar ticks all the boxes. Ideal for collectors or as a standout accent in a classic or eclectic interior.

This tobacco jar was produced by De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft), one of the oldest and most prestigious pottery factories in the Netherlands. Founded in Delft in 1653, Royal Delft became internationally renowned for its hand-painted Delft blue pottery. In the 20th century, the company expanded its collection to include colorful variations and decorative objects inspired by antique models. This piece was sold in the mid-20th century by Egbert Broers in Alkmaar, whose label remains intact on the underside of the jar.

Tobacco jars like this were traditionally used to store pipe tobacco, keeping it fresh and aromatic in shops or homes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were commonly seen on tobacconist counters. In the 20th century, many were produced primarily for decorative purposes. This jar is perfect as a vintage decoration for a mantelpiece, sideboard, or display cabinet. It’s also a sought-after item among collectors of tobacco-related antiques, Delftware, ceramic art with brass accents, or Dutch folk art.

Looking for a unique gift for an antique enthusiast, smoker, or lover of Dutch craftsmanship? This jar makes a fantastic present. Think of it as an original birthday gift, anniversary surprise, housewarming centerpiece, or Father’s Day gesture. It’s also a brilliant choice as a corporate gift or for anyone passionate about interior styling, vintage design, or tobacco history.
