Product Description
This beautiful decorative plate is a classic piece of Delft blue pottery.
It was produced by Regina Holland, a ceramic factory in the Dutch city of Gouda, founded in 1898.
The factory was founded in the coronation year of Queen Wilhelmina in 1898, hence the name Regina. Initially, the company, like almost all Gouda pottery factories, produced earthenware tobacco pipes. The factory was founded by Gerrit Frederik van der Want, a member of the Van der Want pottery family in Gouda, and Georges Antoine Alexis Barras, a Belgian financier and art collector. Their initials, WB, are on almost all products. Regina was able to start producing art pottery in 1917, because the company was able to take over a number of (picture) molds from the bankrupt Hague pottery factory Rozenburg, which produced high-quality pottery from 1883 to 1917.
The edge of the plate features the classic floral decor that is characteristic of Delft blue.
In the middle is a painting by Jan Steen called "In the Herberg".
Inns are generally establishments or buildings where travelers can seek shelter and usually food and drink. Inns are usually located in rural areas or along a highway. Before the advent of motorized transport, they also provided shelter for horses.
Jan Havickszoon Steen (ca. 1626 – buried February 3, 1679) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, one of the most important genre painters of the 17th century. His works are known for their psychological insight, sense of humor and abundance of color.
This piece is in beautiful vintage condition with no chips or cracks. Skem crackle of the glaze is visible. See our photos.
